So you want to submit something? Awesome! Submissions are currently open and accepted on a rolling basis. To ensure that your submission will be considered, please adhere to the below guidelines.
We accept works of narrative nonfiction, fiction, and poetry.
We do not currently offer payment for submissions. However, we pledge to never charge a fee for submissions.
Your work must NOT have been previously published elsewhere. Publication rights can be complicated, and this policy ensure that you and we will avoid legal issues. Additionally, your work must always be your own, and you must have all rights to it. By submitting your work, you are giving us permission to publish it for the first time digitally (specifically First Electronic Rights for publication on our website), but you retain all other rights related to your work and can have your work published physically or elsewhere digitally after it has been published with us, provided that the other publication is okay with that.
You MUST be at least 13 years of age to submit work. We do not knowingly collect information and/or submissions from people under 13 years of age.
We reserve the right to reject any submission for any reason. While we will attempt to provide information about why we accept or reject a submission, that may not always be possible.
If your submission is accepted, we expect you to work with our editors to prepare it for publication. You will have the final say about any changes to your work, however.
You must read through and strictly follow the guidelines for the work you are submitting.
You will have a byline and, optionally, a short biography on each work of yours that we publish. Please do not include a biography in your submission; we will work with you to create your biography if your work is accepted and you would like one.
We try to acknowledge receipt of all submissions within a week of receiving them. An acceptance decision may take longer than that. If it has been more than a week since you sent your work and you have not gotten a confirmation that we have received it, please email firstname.lastname@example.org with your information.
We aim to publish one collection with works from seven to ten authors every two months, but submissions are accepted on a rolling basis.
The subject of your email should start with "SUBMISSION:" and include the title of your submission. Send all submissions to email@example.com.
Before you put the content of your submission, please provide the following details in list form:
Your name, as you would like it to appear on your byline
Your submission type (fiction, narrative nonfiction, or poetry)
The length, in words, of your submission
Please send your submission from an email that you check regularly, as that is how we will contact you if you get accepted.
Paste your submission into the body of your email. Do NOT upload it as an attachment; attachments will not be opened.
Narrative Nonfiction Submissions:
We prefer a strong voice or unique take on the situation you present.
You should NOT write someone else's story (events that did not happen to you) in first-person and/or claim it is your own.
Submissions should be relevant outside of the current news cycle. In other words, your submission should not be directly tied to current events, and should be a good and important read even after the media moves on to the next big thing.
All nonfiction submissions must be less than 3500 words.
You MUST carefully fact-check all information in your submission. If you use sources, be sure to cite them (we prefer Chicago-style citations).
Clearly state that it is a fictional submission. Please also state if you have some sort of personal connection to the theme/story/characters/events. For example, if your story is about homophobia and you are gay, we would like to know.
Fiction submissions should not be erotica. While it is certainly acceptable to reference your or your characters' experiences with xenophobia and/or bigotry (including but not limited to racism, sexism, LGBT-phobia, antisemitism, or Islamophobia) in your work, your work should not promote discriminatory beliefs.
All fiction submissions must be less than 3500 words.
Poetry should be emailed formatted exactly how you want it to be viewed/published, including with line breaks and indentation as necessary.
We prefer poetry that is 45 lines long or less.
Please submit no more than 5 poems in one email. We may not accept any or all of the poems in a given email, however.
