This peso

it’s my lucky coin

an amuleto

pressed into my childhood palm

a cushion

but now suspended 

from a chain

around my throat.

It’s blessed 

for no reason

other than that

she said it was.

Must be

just

the atmosphere.

The lights.

That’s why I

find it so hard 

to eat.

It can’t be You

seated opposite me.

those posters of Italy

not

your warm eyes

freezing me 

my fork
